Monthly Meeting Summary
The meeting was preceded at 6:30pm by attendees enjoying sub sandwiches, chips, dessert, and refreshments. This was in conjunction with the theme of the meeting: “Sandwiches & Substance”.
Meeting was called to order by Terry Yarns at 7:00pm with the Pledge of Allegiance. Attendance was 37.
Secretary Report of previous month’s minutes was presented by Don Breuker Secretary. Motion to approve the minutes was made by Harold Prior and seconded by Marti Nodland. Carried.
Treasurer Report was presented by Terry Yarns. Ending Balance on 8-17 was $4,548.64. All campaign checks have cleared. Motion to approve the Treasurer Report as presented was made by Patrick Kelly and seconded by Loui Hasnenwinkel. Carried.
Items of Business for Discussion:
Yard Signs. Blue Wave Signs are $5 each. Info about the availability of Candidates signs will be emailed. Alex J (Dickinson County Organizer, Iowa Democratic Party) will be the contact person.
Where to Place Yard Sign. It varies from town, rural and Homeowners Association. Contact your specific local direct to find out.
Voting. Early voting starts: October 14 at the Auditor’s office. Mail-Ins: Sending October 14 – 19. Ballots due in by November 3, at 8:00 PM. To find your precinct, go to IA Secretary of State website https://sos.iowa.gov/elections-voting.
Poll Watchers/Security. Poll watchers are wanted and there is training from Des Moines. Contact Terry. The Auditor's office and local law enforcement are prepared. If there are any issues on Election Day, call and law enforcement will be dispatched immediately.
Central Committee Precinct Members. Terry wants this completed by year end. We currently have 6 of our 12 precincts filled. Precincts left to be filled are: 5, 6, 8, 9, 11, 12.
Canvassing Events. Alex Jones, state campaign representative and organizer for the State Party, informed us that there will be a canvassing event every weekend in October. There are 2,200 registered Democrats in Dickinson County and in the last election only 1,200 voted. Times will be: Saturday 9, noon, 3. Sunday Noon, 3 and 6. Final Four, Oct 31 – Nov3. Saturday, Sunday and Monday, 9, noon, 3 and 6. Election Day Nov 3 at 7, 9 noon and 3. Details on canvassing and training will be emailed out.
Clay County Fair – Democrats Booth. Cheri Shatto provided an update. Those helping from Dickinson County were: Kaylene, Marti, Jan, Jessie, Heather, Jamie, Terry and Harold. Good interaction with fair goers. Many Republicans expressed they are going to vote for Democrats. Candidates that attended were Dave Dawson, John Norwood, District 3 Candidate Mike Frantz, and Rob Sand.
Other Issues:
Iowa Amendment 1 on the Ballot is: Two-Thirds Legislative Vote Requirement for Income Tax Increase Bills Amendment (2026) Chairman Terry stated that the passage would have negative impact on local residents especially for moderate income people as most likely it will increase sales tax. Encourage to vote NO on the ballot.
Debates. Dave Dawson: Sept 30 at 7pm on KTIV. Oct 14 on IA PBS at 7pm. Rob Sand: Oct 6 at 7pm on IA PBS, Oct 14 at 7pm on KTIV.
Local Democratic Party Campaign Office. Continuing to explore possible locations for a local Democratic Office in the lakes area.
